Welcome to our Karl Bodmer Reproductions Web Page!

Here we show you reproductions of some of the best paintings by Karl Bodmer. Karl Bodmer (1809-1893), born in Switzerland, accompanied the German Prince Maximilian zu Wied on his legendary expedition to the American West 1832-1834. Some years later Prince Maximilian's narrative - Reise in das innere Nordamerika in den Jahren 1832-1834 (Travel in the Interior of North America 1832-1834) - was published.

Bodmer's illustrations of nature scenes and members of different Indian tribes and Maximilian's narrative resulted in an amazing historical and scientific publication. Of course, these two men were not the first who explored the American West, but the collaboration of a nature scientist like Prince Maximilian von Wied and a skilled illustrator like Karl Bodmer made this publication absolute unique.

Bodmer painted portraits of Indian chiefs, Indians in ordinary life, and nature scenes, among other. After their return 1834 Bodmer finished 81 of his paintings, which are included in the publication. Originally he painted about 400 water-colours on this journey. Some of them were sold on a subscription basis, other plates were exhibited in 1836 at the Paris Salon. Within the following years Bodmer won different awards for his great work of art. He painted landcape, animals, and nature scenes until his death in 1893.

If you like one or another of these great paintings, you can get your reproduction as hand painted oil painting on canvas in two different sizes. But now, please view our Karl Bodmer Reproductions Web Presentation.

Enjoy this great work of art.
